Pickups are used to translate the vibration of the guitar’s strings into an electronic signal which can be understood by an amplifier. The two basic types of pickups are single coil and humbuckers. Bridges hold your strings up at the correct height from the body. Most instruments like on a popular Gibson guitar you find will have fixed bridges, which can be adjusted for height but are stuck firmly in place. Floating bridges are not firmly attached to the body of the instrument and can be made to wobble back and forth with a whammy bar (or tremolo bar). This produces the same effect as vibrato, a rapid fluctuation between slightly higher and lower tones. The most famous floating bridges are made by Floyd Rose, which also have a special locking system to keep your strings in tune.
The most important specifications to do with the guitar neck are scale length, neck radius, and nut width. The scale length is the length of the vibrating portion of the strings, from the nut to the bridge. Generally, this will either be 24 and 3/4 inches or 25 and 1/2 inches. The nut width is the width of the neck at the top of it (at the junction with the headstock), and is usually between 1.625 and 1.7 inches. Wider necks give you more space between strings. Neck radius gives you an idea of how far the neck comes out behind the fretboard. This is measured as if the curve of the back of the neck continued around to form a circle; the figure is the radius of that circle. Radius can be anywhere from 7 to 14 inches, with larger numbers meaning a flatter neck.
